Kim Weaver, candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, released a statement today in response to comments made by Congressman Steve King on Friday during a hearing on the Hyde Amendment.

“We’ve all become somewhat numb to the outrageous, inflammatory, and divisive things my opponent says, because he says them so often. Comparing low-income women of color with unintended pregnancies to a dog with a litter of puppies, though, is a new low, even for Steve King. It was appalling and disgusting, and frankly I was shocked when I heard what he said during the Hyde Amendment hearing on Friday. And believe me, it’s not easy to shock me when it comes to statements made by Steve King.

“The fact that he has once again disparaged people who don’t share his heritage and skin tone by comparing them to animals brings to mind a question: Does he do this to intentionally de-humanize what he calls other ‘subgroups,’ or is it that he actually doesn’t look at them as human beings, and he sees them more like animals? It’s one of those questions where either answer is horrible, and frankly, should be unacceptable from a member of Congress. Iowans deserve to have a Representative that will actually address real issues instead of one who is only known for insulting and disrespectful statements.”
